Defining the Working Parts of Your Garage Door

Your garage door is the largest moving mechanism in your home, and it is made up of several different parts. So here is a rundown of the various garage door terms, parts and functions from our garage door service experts.

garage door service

Astragal: Technical name for the weather stripping that runs along the bottom of your garage door. It keeps drafts and rain from coming into your garage.

Backroom: The amount of space needed to install a garage door; measured from the door to the back of the horizontal track.

Bottom bracket: Also known as corner brackets, this is where the lifting cables are attached on most sectional doors.

Cable: Connects the bottom bracket to the counterbalance mechanism and helps lift the garage door.

Cable drums: Keep the lifting cable in line and from getting tangled. If this should happen, call your garage door service right away as this is one of the most important parts of a tensions spring system.

Cable safety device: If the cable ever breaks, this keeps the garage door from falling.

Center hinge: A flat hinge that is put on the door section and allows it to pass through the curve between the horizontal and vertical tracks.

Curtain: The face of your garage door; goes up and down or side to side.

Cycle: The term for when your garage door goes from fully closed to fully open and then back to fully closed. You garage door service will rate parts like torsion springs based on how many of these cycles they can safely complete in their lifetime.

Extension springs: Carry the weight of the door as it lifts. Your garage door service can tell you how important they are because they carry the weight of the door as it lifts.

Hinges: Connect the sections of the garage door and allow it to bend as it runs up the vertical track and onto the horizontal track. (The horizontal track runs parallel to the garage ceiling, the vertical track runs perpendicular to the ceiling and floor.)

Jambs: Vertical pieces on either side of the door frame; the jamb seal is the weather stripping that runs around the jamb and helps prevent drafts and rain from getting into the garage.

Photo-electric sensor: This is the safety feature required by law that reverses the direction of your garage door if it senses that it will come into contact with some type of obstruction.

Spring assembly: The parts that transfer the garage door’s weight to the counterbalance system.

And, this isn’t all of them! Our garage door service can tell you more about garage door parts and help you schedule a garage door repair or installation. Call Garage Door Services today at 815-544-1927 or Contact Us.
